Good news re Covenant Health contract discussions!

Recently representatives of the CAA met with Covenant Health to express concerns about the contract language and various terms within their Prime Consultant Agreement. We are pleased to be able to share some good news about the outcome of the meetings.

Covenant Health administration was willing to listen to the CAA's perspective. Through a series of conversations, the issues were explored and ultimately several clauses were adjusted.

We wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to Covenant Health for their respectful and collaborative spirit!

Following is a summary of some of the changes made:

Consequential Damages
Covenant Health (CH) removed language that would make the prime consultant (and the client themselves) responsible for consequential damages because of any alleged failures by either party.  Read More ›

Advocacy policy positions approved by Board

Over the past several months, the Advocacy Committee has been working on an advocacy strategy to guide the CAA through our advocacy agenda in a focused, proactive manner. While we will continue to be as responsive as possible, it is hoped that by identifying our priority issues and declaring specific positions, we can reduce the "whack-a-mole" approach to issue management (dealing with issues only as they pop up).

A set of position statements has now been posted online. We will begin to communicate these to all client groups. We welcome your comments and feedback on any of these position statements.  CLICK HERE to browse through the CAA's policy statements.

Brad Kennedy accepts position on CAA Board as Vice-Chair

We are pleased to announce that Brad Kennedy, of Brinsmead Kennedy Architecture, was recently voted into the position of Vice Chair for the CAA Board of Directors. The position had been vacant since Doug Cinnamon accelerated his leadership to take on the position of Acting Chair when Daryl Procinsky stepped back mid-term. This gap was not immediately filled at election time (when Doug became Chair) and remained vacant for several months.

Brad joined the CAA Board in October 2012 and has quickly come up to speed on the CAA's advocacy, policy and operational issues. The Board of Directors has been impressed with Brad's leadership skills and fresh perspective. Brinsmead Kennedy does a significant amount of private sector work, and Brad brings this perspective to bear on discussions around the board table.

Congratulations Brad and thank you for your ongoing commitment to CAA!

CAA's review service has first municipal client

As noted in the last newsletter, the CAA is now offering public owners a free review service of RFP, RFQ or RFEOI documents. Our goal is to assist them in clarifying and standardizing the language within their proposal calls to architects so that the intent, and therefore the client's needs, are well articulated - making it easier for consultants to respond.

The Town of Fort Macleod has come forward as our first client!  Their Town Office is a designated Provincial Historic Site and they would like to expand on their existing building. In the early stages of their process they have asked the CAA for some advice. Members of our Procurement & Contracts Committee are providing support to their inquiry.

Mike Woodland joins MTA as Studio Lead

Mike Woodland, Architect AAA, has joined Marshall Tittemore Architects (MTA) as Studio Lead in their Edmonton office. MTA is delighted over the notable benefit to their clients that his presence will undoubtedly bring.

His 20 years of progressive experience with municipal, provincial and private-sector clientele includes: the City of Edmonton, Edmonton Transit, University of Alberta, NAIT and CIMA+. Based in the Edmonton office, Woodland will focus on central and northern Alberta-based client groups.

Benefits corner

We have partnered with The Silverberg Group to offer customizable employee benefits plans to CAA member firms. The following information is offered by The Silverberg Group:

Emergency Travel Coverage

A medical emergency while traveling can be a frightening and costly experience to you and your family.

Outside Canada Emergency Travel is included in most Group Employee Benefit Plans.  It insures you and your eligible dependents based on the dependent definition in the Group Health Policy.  For the majority of emergency travel situations, this coverage is adequate to cover unforeseen medical issues.

An ‘emergency’ means an acute illness or accidental injury that requires immediate medically necessary treatment prescribed by a doctor.
