Our Story

Manasc Isaac is an innovative, award-winning architectural firm and a recognized Canadian leader in sustainable design. Dedicated to a client-centered planning, design and construction approach to architecture, our firm has a reputation for architecturally stunning and technically outstanding buildings.

Thirty years ago there were many architects in Edmonton and not much work. Even worse, clients had little appetite for imagination and meaning in the city’s architecture. Alberta’s boom-and-bust cycles had created a culture of disposability. We wanted it cheap and we wanted it fast. When we had a major public project, we felt we had to import design talent.

Rather than complain, Vivian Manasc and Richard Isaac began designing and experimenting in the far north. With projects like Driftpile School they learned lessons in cold climates and in Indigenous communities that influenced the rest of their careers: how to use the power of the sun, how to bring people together and ask the best questions, how to design with beauty and a sense of place and with a respect for local culture. In the north, they learned to design buildings that can improve our environment. They didn’t want to impose a quick design on a client and move on to the next one. They had learned to work differently, and think differently.

In 1997 Vivian and Richard brought these lessons together and founded our firm, Manasc Isaac. That same year, Manasc Isaac launched the first Sustainable Building Symposium to educate our potential clients, builders, and competitors. We went on to pioneer many sustainable “firsts:” the first LEED, the first LEED Silver, and the first LEED Gold north of the 60th parallel. Today, the Mosaic Centre for Conscious Community and Commerce goes beyond LEED and aims to be both the first net-zero commercial building and the first Living Building Challenge petal-certified project in the province.

History cont'd

Architects from across Canada and around the world came to Edmonton to learn more about Manasc Isaac and the way we work. Many joined the team. In 2012, we launched a Calgary studio, Reimagine Interiors by Manasc Isaac; the Calgary team now employs 5 staff members and is growing. In 2016, Manasc Isaac opened a third studio called Latitudine53 in Bucharest, Romania, seeking to export the benefits of sustainable design to Europe.

Manasc Isaac creates an enriched quality of life through dialogue, engagement, planning, design and construction of outstanding, healthy, sustainable buildings and communities rooted in culture, technology and vision.

What makes each of our projects interesting, and more importantly, successful, is a thorough exploration of each client's aspirations, a commitment to improving the environment, and a realization that each project can be a positive contributor to the community.
